A Servant's Heart
The History of a Spoon:
Spoons have been used as eating utensils since Paleolithic times. It is most likely that prehistoric peoples used shells or chips of wood as spoons. In fact, both the Greek and Latin words for spoon are derived from cochlea, meaning a spiral-shaped snail shell. This suggests that shells were commonly used as spoons in Southern Europe.
Additionally, the Anglo-Saxon word spoon, meaning a chip or splinter of wood, points toward widespread use of this material for Northern European spoons. In addition to shell and wood, spoons have also been made from metals (such as gold, silver, and pewter), ivory, bone, horn, pottery, porcelain, and crystal.
During the Middle Ages, spoons, generally made of wood or horn were supplied by dinner hosts. Royalty often had spoons made of gold, and other wealthy families generally had silver spoons. However, beginning around the 14th Century, spoons made of tinned iron, brass, pewter, and other metals, as illustrated by the spoons below, became common.
The use of pewter, especially, made spoons more affordable for the general populace.spoon (spn)n. 1. A utensil consisting of a small, shallow bowl on a handle, used in preparing, serving, or eating food.
Andy and Joan have founded their company on biblical foundations. Their main focus, as Andy repeatedly shares with us is to serve others. In fact, you will never hear Andy speak on sales, but only on how we, as Jewelers in Premier, can serve others daily. We need to have Servant?s Hearts in all we do in life, but most importantly in the way we run our Premier Businesses.Hostesses:
*Show true gratefulness and sincerity when they book with us. Share with them that our business? lifeline is home shows, and without them, we could not have the success businesses we do. Explain to them that our job is to serve them in the best way possible through Premier.
*When arriving to a show, keep the conversation focused on the Hostess. We want to show her we are grateful for her time, for her sharing her home with us, and for trusting us to meet her friends and family. By inquiring about her work, her family, and her family, we show that we are interested in building a relationship with her and how important she is to our lives.
*Arrive at the location early enough that you have time to help the Hostess finish up her preparations. This might be by filling up the glasses with ice and drink, helping to uncover plated cookies, or helping her as she finishes putting together her food table. By being an aid to the hostess, we are helping to serve her, in that moment.Guests:
*Welcome guests at the door, ask to take their coat or jacket, introduce your self, and make an incredible effort to learn their name. Make them feel welcome and at home, complementing something you appreciate about them.*Ask them if you can get them a drink or something to eat, and again help them feel as comfortable as possible.
*During our show call guests by their names, help them to interact in our presentations. Keep the show focused on our business, but again making the Hostess and each Guest feel important and blessed to be a part of the evening.
*Help them in any way, from finding items in the catalog for them, to helping the guests put on and take off the jewelry, to providing them with mirrors and positive feedback. We are there, in that moment to serve them.
*Get to know each guest by asking her about her family, her friends, her job, and her life in general. Help her to understand that we want to get to know her because she is important, not because we want her order. After a Show, everyone should leave feeling special, important, and excited that they spend the time at a Premier Gathering.Returns:*I always respond to a return with how thankful I am to work for a company that stands behind their beautiful products, and that I'm so glad they contacted me.
*Although returns can be frustrating and time consuming, it is not the guests fault her item needs to be exchanged or returned, thus she should never feel our negative feelings.*She needs to feel that we are grateful for her return, and excited that we can get her a replacement item, and that she can contact us again in the future.
*I do this by thinking that this is a way to server my guests and hostesses, and continue my job as a Premier Jeweler. In closing, I took away so much from Rally: stronger friendships, a deeper faith, more information that I could ever imagine and so much more. However the main idea that blankets all I learned was to be a person with a Servant?s Heart. By doing some of the ideas above, I hope that I'm doing that and pleasing God by serving others.
So, next time you see a spoon, I hope you?ll think of the amazing servant that we can all be, and that our world would be a better place if we all looked at life as an opportunity to serve others.
